Juniper Reed Trio

Juniper Reed Trio

This is a new trio of three principal NZSO players: Helen Clinton – oboe, Romola Smith – clarinet and Sam Brough – bassoon

Helen Clinton has been associate principal oboe in the NZSO since 2023. Before this she was freelancing with orchestras in Sweden and Stockholm and in the United Kingdom, particularly in the north of England where she grew up. After graduation she joined the Southbank Sinfonia in London and subsequently appeared as an on-stage musician for three years in National Theatre’s revival of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus.

Romola Smith is principal bass clarinet in the NZSO. She is currently working in Australia where she was born and New Zealand and in Stockholm where she works with the Orchestra of the Royal Swedish Opera. She moved to the UK as a child and attended the junior department of the Royal Academy of Music in London. She was awarded a Bachelor of Music with honours from King’s College, London. She played in both the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta and was a Britten Pears Young Artist for many years. In 2018 she was conferred with an Associateship of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for her significant contribution to music.

Fresh from four years as principal contrabassoon in the Auckland Philharmonia, Sam Brough was appointed Associate Principal Bassoonist with the NZSO in 2026. He has also worked with the Swedish chamber orchestra, Dalasinfoniettan. Sam moved to New Zealand with his Kiwi husband in 2021 having freelanced extensively in the UK and Scandinavia. Sam is currently president of the NZ Double Reed Society. Highlights in his life come from regular Bassoon Bashes. He is also a keen amateur potter, seeking to create the perfect reed pot.

This concert is presented in association with Chamber Music NZ.
